About this wine
Cape Mentelle is one of the founding wineries of Margaret River in Western Australia, established in 1970 by David Hohnen and his brothers Mark and Giles. This white blends Sauvignon Blanc with Semillon, the same pairing used for white Bordeaux, from the estate's Wallcliffe, Crossroads and Chapman Brook vineyards in the cooler south of the region.
The 2020 is 79% Sauvignon Blanc and 21% Semillon. It was a tiny crop after one of the hottest, driest summers on record, picked at night and early morning to keep it fresh. Fermented cold in steel, with a small barrel-fermented portion, it then rested four months on its lees. Best drunk young, within about five years.
