About this wine

Le Vassal is the second wine of Château de Mercuès, drawn from the gravelly rises around the château on the third terraces of Caillac and Mercuès, planted at 6,666 vines per hectare. It is raised for ten months in stainless steel to keep the fruit forward. Deeply coloured, with complex red-fruit aromas, elegant tannins and good breadth, it finishes long on pepper and spice. The producer suggests drinking it within five to ten years.

from the producer

Château de Mercuès overlooks the Lot valley near Cahors; once the summer residence of the bishops and counts of Cahors, it has belonged to the Vigouroux family — Malbec growers since 1887 — since 1983. Half of its 32 hectares of clay-limestone vineyard is planted at 6,666 vines per hectare, far denser than the Cahors norm.
