Jose Cuervo traces its roots to 1795, when the Spanish crown granted José María Guadalupe de Cuervo a license to produce and sell 'vino de mezcal', the forerunner of tequila. The family's distillery in the town of Tequila, La Rojeña, dates to 1812 and is still working.

Cuervo calls itself the world's number-one tequila brand, and its Especial Silver and Gold are fixtures of American bars and parties.
