About this wine
Podere Il Balzo’s 2020 Chianti Rufina is made by Paolo Ponticelli from about seven hectares of vines at 300–400 metres in the hills of Rufina, where clay and calcareous soils full of rocks and stones give natural drainage. The blend is 90% Sangiovese with Canaiolo, Colorino and Malvasia Rossa. Hand-selected grapes picked in October macerate on the skins for about 20 days and ferment in temperature-controlled steel, then the wine ages around 18 months in cement and barriques, followed by six months in bottle.

Podere Il Balzo is Paolo Ponticelli’s family estate in Rufina. Its first vineyard was planted in 1999 and the first estate wine followed in 2006. The farm occupies 30 hectares, including vines and olive groves alongside pasture, fields and woodland. Organic conversion began in 2016, while Federico Giuntini and enologist Franco Bernabei advise on winemaking.
