About this wine

Royal Tokaji’s Aszú 5 Puttonyos 2018 comes from a vintage with the earliest harvest in living memory: a warm, dry autumn, with occasional showers bringing enough noble rot for a fine selection of Aszú berries. The berries were macerated in fermenting must for two days, pressed, and the wine then matured for more than two years in 300- and 500-litre Hungarian oak casks in the estate’s deep underground cellars, with the final blend assembled in spring 2021. Grapefruit, apricot and spice on an elegant, floral nose lead to a rich, full-flavoured palate kept lively by crisp acidity.

Founded in 1990 by Hugh Johnson and fellow investors, Royal Tokaji helped revive Hungary’s historic wine culture after Communism. The estate works in Tokaj, the world’s original classified wine region, where its focus on Aszú preserves the area’s celebrated sweet-wine heritage.
