About this wine
Uccelliera is Andrea Cortonesi’s estate on the slopes of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, south-east of Montalcino. Its Rosso di Montalcino comes from about ten hectares planted between 1988 and 2000 at 150–350 metres, on calcareous clay with sand and marl. The 2023 grapes were hand-picked from 18 September, destemmed with dry ice and kept cool for a week so native yeasts could start a spontaneous fermentation of 25–30 days. After malolactic in steel, the wine spent some months in Slavonian and French oak and at least four months in bottle.
Highlights
- 100% Sangiovese from Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Montalcino
- Spontaneous fermentation after a cool pre-fermentation soak
- Aged in Slavonian and French oak, then at least four months in bottle

from the producer
Uccelliera is a historic farm on the Castelnuovo dell’Abate hillside near Sant’Antimo Abbey and Mount Amiata. Andrea Cortonesi, the son of sharecroppers, worked the vineyards from childhood and acquired the property in 1986. His estate combines long agricultural roots with a careful, site-focused approach to Montalcino Sangiovese.
