About this whiskey

Laphroaig Select blends whiskies aged in Oloroso sherry butts, Pedro Ximénez hogsheads, first-fill ex-bourbon quarter casks and ex-bourbon casks, then finishes them in virgin American oak barrels, a rare wood for Scotch. The distillery calls it its most approachable whisky.

Forward peat smoke is followed quickly by ripe red fruit. The palate is sweet at first, then peat smoke with dashes of ash and seaweed, and the long finish has floral notes with touches of marzipan and lime.

Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers on the south coast of Islay, off Scotland's west coast. It still malts part of its own barley on floor maltings and dries it over local Islay peat smoke.

The result is one of the most distinctive whiskies in the world: big peat smoke, medicinal and seaweed notes, balanced by sweetness from American oak.
