from the producer
Nikka Whisky was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who studied whisky-making in Scotland and is often called the father of Japanese whisky. He built his first distillery at Yoichi, on the island of Hokkaido, for its cool, Scotland-like climate, and later added Miyagikyo in the forested hills near Sendai.
Nikka also operates rare Coffey column stills, and is known for full-bodied, characterful whiskies.
