About this whiskey

Edition No. 5, released in September 2019, is a homage to The Macallan's natural colour, made with the Pantone Color Institute, which created the shade 'Edition Purple' for its packaging. Only American oak casks were hand-picked for it, chosen primarily for their colour. The Macallan describes vanilla and toffee with oak, nutmeg, ginger, lemon basil and pear; a fresh, sweet palate of caramel, poached peaches and ripe pear with toffee and light oak spice; and a long, sweet finish.

The Macallan was founded in 1824 on the Easter Elchies estate in Speyside, and was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed. It is known above all for its long relationship with sherry-seasoned oak: casks are made and seasoned in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, before being shipped to Scotland to mature the spirit.

Every Macallan is bottled at its entirely natural colour, which comes only from the wood. The distillery is part of the Edrington group, and its current distillery on the estate, built into the Speyside hillside, opened in 2018.
